BUILT IN 1928 BY SWAN HUNTER IN WALLEND. SHE WAS THE SISTER SHIP TO KAREMA / 2ND, COPTIC/  2ND, AND TARANAKI.

IN 1941 SHE LEFT LIVERPOOL UN-ACCOMPANIED FOR A VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA, AND WAS NEVER SEEN AGAIN, BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN TORPEDOED BY A GERMAN SUBMARINE ( ITS A FIRM POSSIBILITY THAT IT WAS THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-106 THAT SANK HER ON THE 16TH JANUARY 1941, IN POSITION  58.28N 20.43W ) THERE WERE 74 PEOPLE ONBOARD.THE CAPTAIN AT THE TIME OF THE ZEALANDIC LOSS WAS CAPTAIN F J OGILVIE.

THE U.106 WAS SUNK IN 1943 BY DEPTH CHARGES DROPPED FROM A SUNDERLAND AIRCRAFT.TWENTY-TWO OF THE CREW WERE KILLED WITH 36 BEING LATER PICKED UP.

CAPTAIN FREDERICK JAMES OGILVIE, PICTURED WITH HIS OFFICERS WHILST SERVING ON THE FORDSDALE. CAPTAIN OGILVIE HAD JOINED SSA IN 1923, HIS FIRST SSA VESSEL HAD BEEN THE HOBSONS BAY. HE ALSO COMMANDED THE WAIMANA IN 1937, AND THE RARANGA IN 1939.
