MATATUA WAS BUILT BY R STEPHENSON AT HEBBURN IN 1890 AND WAS A VESSEL OF 3,393 TONS AND OWNED BY SHAW SAVILL & ALBION HER ENGINES HAD BEEN FITTED BY RICHARDSON & SONS OF SUNDERLAND SHE WAS LAID DOWN FOR WILLIAM ROSS BUT WAS SOLD WHILST STILL ON THE STOCKS
IN 1903/1904 SHE WAS SOLD TO THE AUSTRAL-RHODESIAN SS CO OF SOUTHAMPTON AND WAS RE-NAMED 'RHODESIAN'
IN 1906 PURCHASED FROM AUSTRALIAN RHODESIAN SS CO ( BY B J SUTHERLAND & CO LTD OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE ( SOUTHAMPTON

ISLES ) IN POSN 28.29 NORTH 21.00 WEST BY THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-152 COMMANDED
BY CONSTANTIN KOLBE ( THERE IS A REPORT THAT IT WAS THE U-34 THAT
SANK HER WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE INCORRECT )
SHE HAD BEEN ON A VOYAGE FROM BARRY TO SIERRA LEONE WITH A CARGO OF COAL.SHIPS
MASTER WAS TAKEN PRISONER
