STAR OF INDIA / EUTERPE

BUILT IN 1863 ON THE ISLE OF MAN AT THE RAMSEY SHIP YARD BY GIBSON AND CO. SHE WAS ACQUIRED BY SHAW SAVILLE IN 1871.SHE WAS USED BY SHAW SAVILLE & CO AS A CADET TRAINING VESSEL, AS WELL AS GOING ABOUT HER NORMAL DUTIES.SHE WAS LATER SOLD TO AMERICAN OWNERS IN 1898  AND SHE WAS USED TO CARRY SALMON BETWEEN ALASKA AND SOUTH CALIFORNIA.SHE WAS  RE-NAMED  'STAR OF INDIA' IN 1906. SHE WAS LAID UP AFTER WORLD WAR ONE IN 1923.SHE WAS THEN BOUGHT BY A GROUP FROM SAN DIEGO IN 1926.HER RESTORATION BEGAN AFTER W.W.II TO A SEA GOING CONDITION. IN 1976 SHE WAS FULLY RESTORED  AND WAS ABLE TO GO TO SEA , THE FIRST TIME FOR 50 YEARS. SHE LAYS IN SAN DIEGO MARITIME MUSEUM.THE SHAW SAVILL FLAG  IS FLOWN ON HER AT ALL TIMES. THE TOP PICTURE SHOWS HER AS 'EUTERPE' MOORED ALONGSIDE ONE OF SHAW SAVILL & ALBIONS WARE HOUSES.

STAR OF INDIA

THERE WAS ANOTHER " STAR OF INDIA " BUILT IN 1861 BY WRIGHT'S OF ST.JOHNS. THE WHITE STAR LINE CHARTERED HER IN 1861. THE SHIPS MASTER FOR THIS VOYAGE WAS CAPTAIN BUCHANAN. SHE DID A FURTHER VOYAGE TO AUSTRALIA IN 1863 AND AGAIN IN 1866. BEAR IN MIND THAT PRIOR TO 1906 SEVERAL SHIPS COULD BEAR THE SAME NAME, AFTER THIS DATE THE MERCHANT SHIPPING ACT WAS MEANT TO BE ENFORCED, THUS PREVENTING THE USE OF DUPLICATE NAMES ON CURRENT VESSELS

 

 

STAR OF INDIA

STAR OF INDIA WAS A WOODEN VESSEL OF 1,045 TONS.LATER REDUCED TO  A BARQUE.SHE WAS BUILT IN 1861 BY STEPHENS OF DUNDEE AND WAS OWNED BY JOSEPH SOAMES.SHE CHANGED HANDS TO NORWEGIAN OWNERS.IN 1893 SHE WAS ABANDONED IN THE N.ATLANTIC.SHE HAD BEEN ENGAGED ON THE INDIAN AND AUSTRALIAN PASSENGER TRADE.

 

*CAUTION NEEDED WITH PHOTOS THE TOP PICTURE SHOWS HER AS EUTERPE, ALONGSIDE A SHAWSAVILL & ALBION WARE HOUSE SO I AM CONFIDENT THIS IS CORRECT, THE SECOND  PICTURE SHOWS THE 1861 STAR OF INDIA AND THEY ARE VERY SIMLIAR, WITH THE EXCEPTION THIS VESSEL HAS MORE PORT HOLES, PLUS PORT HOLES AROUND HER STERN *
