THE MARCONI TYPE 352 RECEIVER COVERED 15 TO 20,000 METRE, IN  13 BANDS, 8 L.W AND 5 H.F.THE H.F RANGES BEING SELECTED BY CHANGING COILS AND THE L.F RANGES BY A BAND SWITCH. TUNING WAS HELPED BY MONITORING THE ANODE CURRENT OF THE DETECTOR.

THE MARCONI TYPE 352A RECEIVER WAS SIMILAR TO THE 352 BUT SOME IMPROVEMENTS HAD BEEN MADE I.E IN BAND SWITCHING

 

LATVIAN VESSEL "RASMA" MARCONI 352A RECEIVER


PEEP RADA, A DIVER FROM ESTONIA FOUND A MARCONI 352A ON THE SEABED OUTSIDE TALLINN LAYING AT THE STERN OF THE WRECK OF THE " RASMA ", A LATVIAN VESSEL THAT IN 1941 WAS ENGAGED IN CARRYING CARGO FROM RIGA TO TALLINN, AT THE TIME THESE CITIES WERE BEING EVACUATED BY THE SOVIETS, SHE HIT A MINE AND THE SHIPS CAPTAIN, TO AVOID CAPTURE, RAN HIS VESSEL AGROUND ON A NEARBY ISLAND. NOT MUCH IS LEFT OF THE VESSEL AS SHE LAYS IN ONLY 3-11 METRES OF WATER. THE BOTTOM TWO PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW WHAT'S LEFT OF THE MARCONI 352A RECEIVER.

BURGEMEESTER S'JACOB / WIERINGEN / THEODOROS / BALTIK / ZEMVALDIS / RASMA

RASMA WAS A VESSEL OF 3200 TONS AND BUILT IN 1902 BY ROPNER & SONS, STOCKTON AS THE " BURGEMEESTER S'JACOB" FOR N.V SCHEEPVAART MIJ, NEPTUNUS, ROTTERDAM.

IN 1908 SHE WAS SOLD TO N.V STOOMVAART MIJ, ROTTERDAM AND RE-NAMED " WIERINGEN".

IN 1918 SHE WAS REQUISITIONED BY THE U.S GOVERNMENT, AND RETURNED TO HER OWNERS IN 1919.

IN 1922 SHE WAS SOLD TO GALAKIS, CHIOS OF GREECE AND RE-NAMED "THEODOROS".

IN 1928 SHE WAS SOLD TO ATWATER SHIPPING CO, HAMBURG AND RE-NAMED " BALTIK ".

 IN 1929 SHE WAS SOLD TO ANDREAS FRIEDENBERGS, LEO ZAGARS  & OTHERS OF RIGA, LATVIA AND RE-NAMED " ZEMVALDIS" .

 IN 1931 SHE WAS SOLD TO CHR.JENSEN & J.SUNA OF RIGA AND RE-NAMED " RASMA".

IN 1932 SHE WAS SOLD TO LATVIJAS HIPOTEKU BANKA OF RIGA.

 IN 1934 SHE WAS OWNED  BY THE LATVIAN GOVERNMENT - VALSTS KUGA PARVALDE OF RIGA. SHE WAS IN PORT IN THE BALTIC IN JUNE 1940 AND WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE U.S.S.R, CONSEQUENT TO THE ANNEXATION OF LATVIA. ON THE 5TH JULY 1941 SHE WAS MINED OF EKHOLM ISLAND AND IN ORDER TO AVOID CAPTURE BY THE ENEMY SHE WAS BEACHED BY HER  MASTER, NEAR MOHNI. THE MINE FIELD HAD BEEN LAID BY THE SUBMARINE " VESIHIISI ".

 SHE WAS LATER TORPEDOED BY GERMAN MTB'S S.26 AND S.28 ON THE 1OTH JULY 1941. SHE HAD BEEN ON A VOYAGE FROM RIGA ( BEING EVACUATED ) TO TALLINN AND THEN TO LENINGRAD. SHE WAS CARRYING A CARGO CONSISTING OF SINGER SEWING MACHINES.BICYCLES, FLOWER AND WHEAT.NOT A LOT IS LEFT OF THE VESSEL NOW AS SHE LAYS IN SHALLOW WATER, ALTHOUGH A STEAM ENGINE IS STILL INTACT AND REACHES THE WATER SURFACE.

ALL OF THE PEOPLE ONBOARD RASMA MANAGED TO GET ASHORE ONTO THE ISLAND, AND WERE PICKED UP AND TAKEN TO LENINGRAD.

 I READ SOMEWHERE THAT SHE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY REFLOATED AND REPAIRED BY THE SOVIETS AND IS THOUGHT TO HAVE BEEN SCRAPPED ABOUT 1955, DISAPPEARING  FROM LLOYDS REGISTER IN 1960, BUT SOMEONE HAS OBVIOUSLY CONFUSED THIS VESSEL WITH ANOTHER VESSEL POSSIBLE CALLED RASMA ALSO.
