PLEIADES WAS BUILT IN 1869 BY MCMILLAN OF DUMBARTON, FOR ADAMSON & CO OF LONDON.HER OFFICIAL NUMBER WAS 63509. HER MASTER AT THE TIME OF HER LAUNCH WAS CAPTAIN INGLIS. SHE WAS A VESSEL OF 997 / 1,020 TONS

 HER MASTER FROM 1872 TO 1874 WAS CAPTAIN ROBERTS. SHAW SAVILLE PURCHASED HER IN 1873, SPECIFICALLY FOR THE EMIGRANT TRADE, PRIOR TO THIS THEY HAD CHARTERED HER. HER MASTER IN 1875 WAS CAPTAIN DAVIES. FROM 1876 TO 1888 SHE WAS COMMANDED BY CAPTAIN SETTON. IT WAS PLEIADES WHO CAME ACROSS THE " ULSTER " OUT OF ST.JOHNS, DISABLED AND WATERLOGGED WITH A CARGO OF TIMBER IN 1881.

 BETWEEN 1888 AND 1897 SHE WAS COMMANDED BY CAPTAIN MORETON

 SHE WAS  WRECKED IN NEW ZEALAND ON AKITO BEACH IN OCTOBER OF 1899, SHE HAD BEEN IN BALLAST ON A VOYAGE FROM NAPIER TO PORT CHALMERS, CAPTAIN BURTON BEACHED HER WHEN HE REALISED ALL WAS LOST AND TO SAVE THE CREW, WHO ALL GOT ASHORE SAFELY AND WERE TAKEN TO WELLINGTON BY THE "HIMITANGI "
