OBERON / PROSPERRO REPETTO


OBERON / PROSPERO REPETTO WAS BUILT IN 1869 AND  LAUNCHED IN MAY OF THAT YEAR. SHE WAS A IRON VESSEL OF 1,194 TONS. BUILT BY INGLIS AT GLASGOW FOR SHAW & MARTON. SHE WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT AS A STEAM CLIPPER BUT WAS CONVERTED TOO A SAILING VESSEL AS HER ENGINE WAS UNDER RATED AND  FINANCIALLY A DISASTER TO RUN, WITH HER OWNERS RETURNING THE VESSEL TO HER BUILDERS FOR MODIFICATION.

SHE WAS THEN USED ON THE AUSTRALIAN RUN. IN 1881 HER OWNERS WERE LISTED AS SHAW & BUSBY. IN 1883 HER MASTER, CAPTAIN ENGLAND WAS LOST OVERBOARD AND DROWN DURING WILD SEAS. SHE WAS SOLD TO AN ITALIAN COMPANY AND RE-NAMED 'PROSPERO REPETTO'  SHE WAS STILL IN SERVICE WITH THEM UP TO 1900. SHE DISAPPERED FROM THE REGISTRY ABOUT 1905 AND  ASSUMED TO HAVE BEEN SCRAPPED.

SHE HAD DONE A VOYAGE FROM  LONDON TO PORT CHALMERS IN 1873. WHICH I ASSUME WAS THE  SHAW SAVILL CHARTER. SHE  CARRIED SOME GUN POWDER ONBOARD, SO ANCHORED IN THE QUARANTINE GROUND .

 OBERON BUILT IN 1893 BY RUSSEL & CO PORT GLASGOW SHE WAS A  FOUR MASTED BARQUENTINE  OF 1,119 TONS. HER FIRST OWNERS WERE JAMES FAIRLIE OF GLASGOW. LATER OWNERS WERE PEDER JACOBSEN OF PORSGRUNN NORWAY. IN 1916 SHE WAS REGISTERED IN ODENSE TO DANISH OWNERS.IN 1899 SHE WENT ASHORE BUT THE VESSEL WAS LATER SALVAGED. SHE WAS SCRAPPED/BECAME A COAL HULK IN 1924 . THIS IS NOT THE SHAW SAVILL CHARTERD ONE. I INCLUDE IT FOR REFERENCE ONLY

OBERON WAS BUILT BY AUSTIN AND HUNTER AT SUNDERLAND IN 1878 SHE WAS A NORWEGIAN VESSEL OF 755 TONS. HER ENGINES WERE FITTED BY BOLINDERS OF STOCKHOLM

HER LAST OWNERS WERE SORENSEN THYGO OF STOCKHOLM

ON 26TH DECEMBER 1920 ON A VOYAGE FROM LONDON TO GOTEBORG SHE WAS WRECKED BUT THEN REFLOATED AND TOWED TO FREDRIKSHAVN BUT WAS LEAKING BADLY THAT SHE WAS BEACHED OFF HANSTHOLM
