MAYHILL WAS A FOUR MASTED IRON BARQUE OF
2,121 TONS.SHE WAS BUILT BY A STEPHENS & SONS AT DUNDEE IN 1890
SHE HAD BEEN BUILT FOR GEORGE WOOD
SHE WAS SOLD TO W H MYERS & SONS OF LIVERPOOL IN 1893 BUT SHE WAS MANAGED BY
ISMAY IMRIE & CO (WHITE STAR LINE )
SHE SAILED FROM MIDDLESBOROUGH ON 20TH MAY 1895 FOR GERALDTON UNDER THE COMMAND
OF CAPTAIN JAMES HUME. SHE CARRIED A CREW OF 28.
ON THE 10TH AUGUST 1895 SHE STRUCK A REEF OF POINT MOORE. THE TWO NAVIGATIONAL
LIGHTS THE CAPTAIN HAD SEEN SHOULD HAVE BEEN RED BUT THEY
HAD BEEN CHANGED TO WHITE, THUS CAPTAIN HUME IGNORED THEM AS IT DID NOT CONFORM
WITH HIS CHART.
THE MASTER ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE FROM THE VESSEL 'LINDAS' WHICH WAS REFUSED AS
ITS MASTER WAS CONCERNED HE WOULD PUT HIS OWN VESSEL IN PERIL.
MAYHILL REMAINED STUCK ON THE REEF FOR THE NEXT FOURTEEN MONTHS BEFORE SHE
STARTED TO BREAK UP.
THE CAPTAIN WAS CHARGED WITH SEVERAL OFFENSES I.E NOT HAVING UP TO DATE CHARTS
AND ENTERING THE CHANNEL AT NIGHT INSTEAD OF LAYING OFF UNTIL TJHE MORNING THERE
WERE ALSO OTHER CHARGES BROUGHT
SHE HAD BEEN ON A WHITE STAR LINE CHARTER, CARRYING IRON FOR THE MULLEWA- CUE
