MAROI WAS A TWIN SCREW STEAMER OF 5,317 TONS SHE WAS BUILT IN 1893 BY C S SWAN & HUNTER AT WALLSEND ON TYNE SHE WAS FITTED WITH TRIPLE EXPANSION STEAM ENGINE BUILT IN WEST HARTLEPOOL BY THE CENRAL MARINE ENGINEERING WORKS GIVING HER 461 HORSE POWER SHE WAS OWNED BY SHAW SAVILL & CO

ON THURSDAY 5TH AUGUST 1909 AT ONE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING SHE WAS WRECKED NEAR DUIKER POINT SHE HAD A CREW OF 53 ( 20 KM SOUTH OF CAPETOWN ) SHE HAD A CREW OF 53, 32 WERE TO LOSE THEIR LIVES INCLUDING THE SHIPS CAPTAIN ( CAPTAIN NICHOLE )  AND ALL HIS BRIDGE OFFICERS. SHE HAD BEEN ON VOYAGE FROM LONDON TO DUNEDIN

BUILT IN 1890, SHE WAS AT 2711 TONS A BIT TO SMALL, AND PROVED FINANCIALLY UN-VIABLE FOR THE COMPANY

 SHE WAS SENT BACK TO HER BUILDERS AS PART PAYMENT FOR A MUCH LARGER VESSEL.

THE REPLACEMENT VESSEL ALSO TO BE NAMED 'MAORI', WAS SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THE TRADE AND WAS MUCH LARGER AT ABOUT 5200 TONS AND COULD STEAM AT 11 KNOTS.

MAORI WAS SOLD TO FRENCH OWNERS WHO RE-NAMED HER CONSEIPERE IN 1899. SHE WAS WRECKED IN 1908

MAORI WAS A VESSEL OF 800 TONS OWNED BY WILLIS GANN & CO

 SHE MADE SEVERAL VOYAGES TO AUCKLAND, LYTTELTON, NELSON, WELLINGTON AND DUNEDIN FOR  WILLIS GANN & CO

  IN THE 1860'S SHE WAS CHARTERED BY SHAW SAVILL & CO FOR THE IMMIGRANT TRADE

SHE WAS IN NELSON 25TH DECEMBER 1851 CARRYING 51 PASSENGERS

AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS THE " OLD MAORI "
