LINDFIELD
Lindfield was a 4 masted barque built at Grenock by Russell and co ( 98682 Glasgow).She was launched 2nd November 1891.she was a vessel of 2,289 ngrt.She was the sister ship to the Mayfield and the Hinemoa
Her first owner was Walter Saviill of London.Her later owner
was to be H.Jeremiassen of Porsgrund Norway in 1911.There was no name change on
re-registration
In March 1916 when approx 70 miles southwest of Fastnet while on a voyage from
Portland, Oregon to Queenstown (Southern Ireland) carrying a cargo of wheat when
she was stopped by the German submarine U-70 who then sank her with gunfire.U-70
was a type U 66 submarine not to be confused with the first world war U-70's
that were type UB III and another U-70 which was a type UC II. U 70 was
surrendered in November 1918 and broken up in 1920/1921 at Bo'ness
Captain Thomas Roberts ( 1842 - 1909 ) had been master of both the Lindfield and
Mayfield. Being master of the Mayfield from May 1899 to February 1905.He was
master of the Lindfield from 1905 to 1909.
He was also master of the Star of Russia between September 1895 and December
1898.
