KARAMEA  /   MONGIOIA

KARAMEA WAS A VESSEL OF 5,564 TONS, SHE HAD BEEN BUILT IN 1899

 SHE MADE HER MAIDEN VOYAGE FROM LONDON TO SOUTH AFRICA, ON WAR TRANSPORT WORK, HER CARGO ON THIS VOYAGE INCLUDED FOUR HUNDRED TONS OF EXPLOSIVES.

FROM SOUTH AFRICA SHE WENT DOWN TO NEW ZEALAND TO PICK UP A CARGO OF MEAT FOR THE RETURN JOURNEY TO THE U.K, SHE ALSO CARRIED SOME INJURED TROOPS BACK HOME ( BOER WAR WAS GOING ON AT THIS TIME )

IN 1912 SHE WAS PUT ON THE CANADA / NEW ZEALAND SERVICE.

SHE WAS IN COLLISION IN THE RIVER THAMES WITH THE MARIE GARTZ ( GERMAN )

 DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR SHE CAME UNDER GOVERNMENT CONTROL, AND WAS PLACED ON THE NORTH ATLANTIC SERVICE, AND THEN THE SOUTH AMERICAN SERVICE.

IN 1919 SHE WAS IN ANOTHER COLLISION, THIS TIME OFF MONTEVIDEO, WITH THE HAUGLAND ( NORWAY )

 SHE WAS SOLD TO ITALY IN 1925 AND RE-NAMED 'MONGIOIA'. SHE WAS SCRAPPED IN 1929.
