IONIC A VESSEL OF 4,753 TONS BUILT IN BELFAST IN 1883 AND LAUNCHED 1884 BY HARLAND AND WOLFF FOR THE WHITE STAR LINE WHO OPERATED HER FROM 1883 TO 1900

SHE  WAS CHARTERED TO THE NEW ZEAL AND SHIPPING CO AFTER LAUNCH FROM 1883 TO 1884

 IN 1884 SHE WAS CHARTERED TO SHAW SAVILL & ALBION.

 IN 1893 ON THE RETURN JOURNEY FROM CAPE TOWN HER TAIL SHAFT BROKE AND SHE HAD TO BE TOWED BACK TO CAPE TOWN BY THE 'HAWARDEN CASTLE'.

IN 1900 SHE WAS SOLD TO THE ABERDEEN LINE AND RE-NAMED 'SOPHOCLES' AND WAS USED AS A TRANSPORT SHIP DURING THE BOER WAR YEARS. SHE WAS UNDER ABERDEENH OWNERSHIP FROM 1900 TO 1908 WHEN SHE WAS BROKEN UP

IN 1900 SHE SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN ON A CHARTER TO THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT
