GUY MANNERING
Guy Mannering a vessel of
1,419 tons she was owned by William & Gion's Black star line. She had been
built by W H Webb at New York in 1849
On the 28th June 1849 she left Liverpool for New
York quite possibly she was commanded by
Captain William Edwards on this
voyage
She left Liverpool,
England bound New York on 3rd March 1851 with Captain Ostrow in
command
The Guy Mannering arrived in New York , Ellis island ( from
Liverpool ) the 25th October 1853 after
a passage of thirty-seven days she carried 781 passengers, all arrived safely
with Capt Thomas F Freeman in command
She left Liverpool bound for New York on 16th august
1854 with Captain Thomas F Freeman in command
There was another voyage from Liverpool to
New York recorded in 1856
I don’t believe that any of the Liverpool to
New York voyages were on a White star line charter
She left England in August 1857 bound
for Victoria ( must be the voyage detailed below )
Guy Mannering was on a White star line charter in 1857. She
sailed for Australia on 20th august 1857 with Captain Dollard in command. The
master was taken to court on arrival at ?
( I think the arrival port was in Victoria ,she could not possibly have made two voyages to Australia in a 1857
) in December 1857 due to the amount of
complaints received about the passage, notably the quality of food supplied for
the voyage
She did quite a few voyages down to
Australia, but she was not on a White star line charter for these voyages
She sailed from New York 2nd December 1866 bound for
Liverpool with Captain Charles Browne in command carrying a cargo of cotton and
grain. she also carried 36 passengers. On the afternoon of 31st December
at 3 pm 1866 she was wrecked on the west coast of Iona and became a total loss
Nineteen of the thirty six passengers were saved with the other seventeen
perishing.
