FERNGLEN WAS A IRON VESSEL OF 818 TONS, SHE HAD BEEN BUILT IN 1874 AT SUNDERLAND BY HARDIE & CO ( THIS IS NOT CORRECT ) FOR R B PORRETT OF THORNHILL PARK SUNDERLAND SHE HAD BEEN REGISTERED IN SUNDERLAND .
OTHER SOURCES CLAIM THAT SHE WAS BUILT BY JOHN BLUMER & CO OF SUNDERLAND AND WAS A VESSEL OF 818 / 850 TONS ( WHICH I THINK IS CORRECT )
SHE WAS CHARTERED BY THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO AND CARRIED IMMIGRANTS TO NEW ZEALAND, SOME SOURCES REPORT THAT SHE WAS ONLY CHARTERED BY THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO BUT I THINK THAT SHE WAS LATER ACTUALLY OWNED BY THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO. SHE WAS DEFINITLY NOT ON THEIR CHARTER WHEN SHE WAS LOST AT THE MOUTH OF THE COLUMBIA RIVER IN 1881
SHE HAD ACCOMMODATION FOR TWO TO THREE HUNDRED PASSENGERS. SHE WAS CHARTERED BY SHAW SAVILLE & CO FOR THEIR LONDON TO NEW ZEALAND ROUTE, BETWEEN 1874 AND THE 1880'S ( POSSIBLY CHARTERED FROM THE NEW ZEALND SHIPPING CO )
SHE MADE NINE VOAYGES TO NEW ZEALAND WHICH INCLUDED AUCKLAND, WELLINGTON, NELSON, PORT CHALMBERS AND NAPIER
SHE SAILED FROM LONDON ON 3RD JANUARY AND
ARRIVED IN AUCKLAND ON 28TH APRIL 1875
SHE LEFT LONDON ON 9TH DECEMBER 1876 AND ARRIVED IN NAPIER ON 20TH MARCH 1877
WITH CAPTAIN FRASER IN COMMAND
SHE SAILED FROM LONDON 19TH JULY 1880 AND ARRIVED IN AUCKLAND 21ST OCTOBER 1880
ON 22ND AUGUST 1881 WITH CAPTAIN J BUBB IN COMMAND SHE LEFT WELLINGTON IN
BALLAST BOUND FOR PORTLAND OREGON. ON 16TH OCTOBER 1881 SHE RAN AFROUND AT
CLATSOP SPIT AT THE MOUTH OF THE COLUMBIA RIVER.HER CREW OF TWENTY LEFT THE
VESSEL IN THE SHIPS BOAT AND WERE PICKED UP BY THE TUG COLUMBIA.
THE SHIPS MASTER WAS FOUND RESPOSIBLE FOR HER LOSS DUE TO IS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE
OF THE LOCAL LIGHTS AND NOT HAVING SUITABLE CHARTS
DESPITE THE COTRADICTION IN BUILDERS I THINK
THERE WAS ONLY ONE FERNGLEN BUILT IN 1874
