CHILE WAS BUILT IN 1856 AT LONDON AND WAS A BARQUE OF 768 TONS FITTED WITH A 60 HP STEAM ENGINE SHE WAS BUILT BY C LUNGLEY OF LONDON FOR SEYMOUR & CO. HER OFFICIAL NUMBER WAS 9494

SHE WAS INITIALLY ENGAGED IN THE SOUTH AMERICAN TRADE.

SHE WAS CHARTERED BY SHAW SAVILLE & CO FROM SEYMOUR & CO OF LONDON IN 1856. IN 1858 SHE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN OWNED BY GEORGE PEACOCK OF LONDON. IN 1859 HER ENGINES WERE REMOVED AND SHE WAS CONVERTED TO A FULL RIGGED SAILING VESSEL, AND SHE WAS PUT ON THE AUSTRALIAN / NEW ZEALAND EMIGRANT TRADE.CAPTAIN W CULVERT WAS IN COMMAND SOME TIME PRIOR TO HER GOING TO SHAW SAVILL & CO

SHAW SAVILLE & CO PURCHASED HER IN 1868 SHE CONTINUED IN THEIR SERVICE UNTIL 1880 CAPTAIN W CULVERT WAS IN COMMAND AFTER SHAW SAVILL & CO PURCHASED HER

 IN  1874 WHILE AT ANCHOR AT AUCKLAND, DURING A HURRICANE SHE WAS IN COLLISION WITH THE VESSEL 'BEATRICE' , WHO HAD BROKEN HER CABLES AND DRIFTED INTO CHILE.

IN 1880 SHE WAS SOLD TO A SCOTTISH COMPANY BASED IN ABERDEEN.

IN 1892 SHE WAS TWO DAYS OUT OF IQUIQUE BOUND FOR EUROPE WITH NITRATE AS A CARGO, WHEN SHE CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS LOST. IT WAS ALSO FOUND AT THE INQUIRY THAT THE MAINMAST / MAIN YARD WAS FAULTY, THOU WHAT BEARING THIS HAD ON HER LOSS, I AM UNSURE OF. SOME OF HER MASTERS OVER THE YEARS WERE CAPT BRINSDEN / 1860. CAPTAIN TURNBULL / 1860. CAPTAIN CURTHOYS / 1863. CAPTAIN STRINGER / 1865. CAPTAIN PETHERIDGE / 1867. CAPTAIN CULBERT 1869. CAPTAIN BURCH 1872
