SHE HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN LAUNCHED AS AN AMERICAN VESSEL CALLED THE CHALLENGER.
SHE WAS CHARTERED TO SHAW SAVILL & CO LEAVING LONDON DOCKS TOWARDS GRAVESEND ON THE 4TH OF MAY 1863 COMING TO ANCHORAGE AT AUCKLAND HARBOUR ON THE 10TH AUGUST 1863 CAPTAIN CHAPMAN BEING IN COMMAND

THERE WAS ANOTHER VESSEL OF 670 TONS CALLED CHALLENGER WHEN UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN LOVELL HAD SAILED FROM LONDON ON JUNE 25TH IN 1870 CARRYING 26 PASSENGERS ARRIVING ON 1ST OCTOBER OF THE SAME YEAR AT NELSON.
SHE HAD ALSO DONE A PREVIOUS VOYAGE TO PORT CHALMERS, AGAIN UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN LOVELL IN 1869 CARRYING 28 PASSENGERS
