CATHCART WAS A IRON CLIPPER SHIP OF 1,387 TONS SHE HAD BEEN  BUILT IN 1869/70 BY ROBERT STEEL OF GREENOCK HER OWNERS WERE G ADAM & CO OF GREENOCK.

CATHCART WAS OWNED BY ADAM, HAMILTON & CO OF GREENOCK IN 1881

CATHCART WAS SOLD TO ITALIAN OWNERS ( C SAVARESE, CASTELLAMARE ) IN 1897 AND RE-NAMNED 'TEOCLE'

CATHCART WAS SOLD TO A A NORWEGIAN CONCERN ( JOHANSON JOH & CO OF OSLO ) IN 1901 AND WAS RE-NAMED 'ANTIGUA'. SHE WAS WRECKED IN THE MARTIN RIVER QUEBEC ON 16TH NOVEMBER 1911 .THIRTEEN PEOPLE WERE LOST SHE HAD BEEN ON A VOYAGE FROM MARTIN RIVER TO ARDROSSAN WITH A CARGO OF SPOOLWOOD.

SHE SAILED ON THE 11TH JUNE 1874 FROM LONDON TO LYTTLETON ARRIVING 29TH AUGUST 1874.SHE CARRIED 481 GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ONBOARD.THERE HAD BEEN SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE CREW ON VOYAGE, FOUR MEN BEING REMOVED ON ARRIVAL AT LYTTLETON AND SUBSEQUENTLY JAILED.CAPTAIN CRAWFORD HAD BEEN IN COMMAND.

SHE WAS  CHARTERED BY SHAW SAVILL & CO FOR AT LEAST ONE VOYAGE, QUITE POSSIBLY THE ABOVE VOYAGE. THE ABOVE PHOTO OF CATHCART SHOWS HER COMING UP THE RIVER AVON INTO CUMBERLAND BASIN / BRISTOL JUST SLIGHTLY DOWN RIVER FROM THE CLIFTON SUSPENSION BRIDGE.

CATHCART WAS A VESSEL OF 489 TONS.SHE HAD BEEN LAUNCHED IN MARCH 1874 AND HAD BEEN BUILT BY CW DOGGIN & CO AT NORTH SHIELDS. SHE HAD A ONE SCREW ENGINE PUT IN BY W & J ALMOND OF NORTH SHIELDS.SHE WAS OWNED BY BICKELL & CO OF LIVERPOOL.

SHE CHANGED HANDS IN 1875 AND WAS RE-NAMED 'VILLE D'ANVERS'

IN 1882 SHE WAS OWNED BY CIE HAVRAISE PENINSULAIRE OF  LE HARVE

1900 SAW HER RE-NAMED 'CATHCART' FOR CHANNEL DRY DOCKS, SB & ENG CO OF CORK.

SHE WAS RE-NAMED 'GANDA' FOR THE SOC D'ARMEMENT GANTOISE ( T NOLSON & CO) OF GHENT IN 1902,SHE WAS WRECKED ON 8TH AUGUST 1904 AT HELL'S MOUTH WHEN ON VOYAGE TO ANTWERP.

 

*THERE HAS BEEN SOME CONFUSION BETWEEN THESE TWO VESSELS AS TO REGARD THE VOYAGE TO LYTTLETON BOTH VESSELS HAVING BEEN CREDITED WITH HAVING UNDERTAKEN IT WITH CAPTAIN CRAWFORD BEING IN  COMMAND , DATES ETC THE SAME, BUT IT WAS THE 'CATHCART' OF 1,387 TONS WHICH UNDERTOOK THIS VOYAGE*

 

 

 VILLE D'ANVERS / BESSEL

VILLE D'ANVERS WAS A IRON BARQUE OF 468/423 TONS LAUNCHED ON 26TH JUNE 1869.SHE HAD BEEN BUILT BY READHEAD SOFTLEY & CO AT SOUTHSHIELDS

SHE STRANDED ON 28TH OCTOBER 1912 AT THE ENTRANCE TO PORT AUDIERNE AFTER HER ANCHORS FAILED IN A STORM.SHE HAD BEEN ON A VOAGE FROM ARUBA TO NANTES CARRYIN A CARGO OF PHOSPHATE

SHE WAS UNDER THE BELGIUM FLAG AT THE TIME OF HER LOSS BUT HAD BEEN UNDER THE GERMAN AND NORWEGIAN FLAGS DURING HER LIFE
