 BRITISH SOVEREIGN

THE BRITISH SOVEREIGN WAS A 3 MASTED FULLY RIGGED IRON VESSEL OF 1,292 TONS BEING BUILT IN 1864 BY G ROBINSON & CO OF CORK.SHE WAS OWNED BY THE BRITISH SHIPOWNERS CO FROM 1864 TO 1880 THEN CHANGED HANDS AND WAS OWNED BY GILLISON & CHADWICK OF LIVERPOOL FROM 1880 TO 1881.

THE WHITE STAR LINE CHARTERED HER FROM THE BRITISH SHIPOWNERS AND IN DECEMBER 1870 SHE  SAILED FOR MELBOURNE WITH CAPTAIN JACKSON IN COMMAND

ON 28TH APRIL 1881 SHE LEFT DUNDEE BOUND FOR SAN FRANSICO WITH 22 PEOPLE ONBOARD. SHE WAS NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN.CAPTAIN GALLIAON WAS IN COMMAND

 

 

 BRITISH SOVEREIGN

  THERE WAS AN EARLIER VESSEL CALLED BRITISH SOVEREIGN  A VESSEL OF 493 TONS BEING BUILT IN SUNDERLAND IN 1840.

SHE LEFT DUBLIN ON 16TH DECEMBER 1840 CARRYING CONVICTS ARRIVING IN VAN DIEMENS LAND ON 18TH MARCH 1841.

IT WAS PROBABLY THE ONLY VOYAGE SHE MADE AS A CONVICT SHIP.

SHE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CARRYING 20 PASSENGERS AS WELL AS THE  CONVICTS.

THE BRITISH SOVEREIGN SAILED FROM LONDON VIA PLYMOUTH ( LEFT PLYMOUTH 12TH / 13TH APRIL 1847  ) AND ARRIVED IN PORT ADELAIDE ON 17TH JULY 1847.CAPTAIN COW WAS IN COMMAND

SHE LEFT LONDON 11TH MARCH 1850 AND ARRIVED IN  PORT ADELAIDE 11TH JUNE 1850

THERE IS A REPORT OF A BARQUE  OF 491 TONS CALLED BRITISH SOVEREIGN BUILT AT BISHOPSMOUTH IN 1840 (  BISHOPSWEARMOUTH WHICH IS NEAR SUNDERLAND ? ? )

OWNED BY BOYD & CO

SHE WRECKED ON EAST EFATE 24TH APRIL 1847 HAVING RUN ONTO SOME ROCKS

SHE  HAD LEDT SYDNEY VIA NEW ZEALAND FOR THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS ON A SANDEL WOOD COLLECTING EXPEDITION

THE SHIPS MASTER CAPTAIN W H JONES AND ALL OF HIS CREW WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TWO  BEING MURDERED BY NATIVES

THE TWO SURVIVORS BEING PICKED UP BY THE WHALING SHIP CLARKSTONE  ( CAPTAIN NIXON IN COMMAND ) 

SHE WAS ALSO REPORTED AS BEING  A BARQUE OF 351 TONS OUT OF SYDNEY ( WAS THIS  HER HOME PORT OR HER DEPARTURE PORT  ? ? IF IT WAS HER DEPARTURE PORT THEN ITS MOST LIKELY THE SAME VESSEL)

( BRITISH SOVEREIGN WAS A BARQUE OF 350 TONS BUILT IN QUEBEC IN 1828 AND REGISTERED IN LONDON THEN REGISTERED IN SYDNEY AUGUST 1838.

OWNED BRIEFLY BY BEN BOYD IN 1845 )

THE DATES SEEM TO CONFLICT HERE FOR THIS VESSEL TO HAVE BEEN THE SAME VESSEL AS THE TOP ONE - IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO RESEARCH THIS VESSEL IN PARTICULARLY A BIT MORE AS IT SEEMS AN INTERESTING STORY.
