THE BRITISH QUEEN WAS THE FIRST VESSEL TO SAIL DIRECTLY FROM LIVERPOOL TO LYTTLETON.
IN 1863 SHE CARRIED IMMIGRANTS, TRYING TO ESCAPE THE HARDSHIPS OF THE TIME CAUSED BY MASS UN-EMPLOYMENT, FROM THE LANCASHIRE AREA DOWN TO LYTTLETON, THEIR FARE BEING PAID BY THE NEW ZEALAND IMMIGRATION COMMISION.

BRITISH QUEEN WAS THE SISTER SHIP TO THE BRITISH KING LAUNCHED 4TH NOVEMBER 1880 FOR THE BRITISH SHIP OWNERS CO. SHE HAD BEEN BUILT BY HARLAND & WOLFF AT BELFAST SHE WAS A VESSEL OF 3,358 TONS
SHE WAS CHARTERED BY THE AMERICAN LINE FOR HER MAIDEN VOYAGE TO PHILADELPHIA
IN 1883 SHE WAS CHARTERED TO SHAW SAVILL & ALBION / NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO, AND MADE FOUR ROUND TRIPS FOR THEM.
IN 1889 SHE WAS PURCHASED BY THE HOLLAND-AMERICA LINE AND RE-NAMED 'OBDAM'.
IN 1905 SHE WAS PURCHASED BY THE ZOTTI LINE AND RE-NAMED 'BROOKLYN'.
IN 1918 SHE WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL BY THE GERMAN SUBMARINE UB.123
