BORROWDALE
An iron ship built in 1868 by Potter & Co, Liverpool for J.D. Newton & Co
Liverpool ( Dale line ) she was originally a full-rigged ship . Official number
ON58950. She launched in November of 1868
White star line chartered her from J Newton of Liverpool and under the command of Capt R Parr made several voyages from Liverpool to Sydney and Melbourne in 1868,1870 and 1871
In 1889 she was Sold to Nicholson & McGill, Liverpool.
She had been converted to a barque in
1903
On 3rd May 1917 ( some reports that this was on 30th April ) she was sunk by the
submarine UB-21 ( Capt Otto Hersing in command ) south of Ireland in
approx position 49 North 10.20 West having sailed earlier from Newport with a
cargo of coal. The crew took to the lifeboats and got ashore safely. She was
under the Russian flag when she was sunk, having been sold to August Troberg and
others of Mariehamn,sweden in 1899 then to Gustaf Erikson, Mariehamn in 1916
Around this time she was re registered under the Russian flag without a change of
name.
