BEBINGTON / HANDEL LUST

BEBINGTON WAS AN IRON BARQUE  BUILT IN 1859 SHE WAS A VESSEL OF 889 / 924 TONS. SHE HAD BEEN BUILT BY ROBERT HICKSON & CO IN BELFAST AND REGISTERED IN LIVERPOOL. SHE WAS  ORIGINALLY ON THE STOCKS AS 'OCEOLA' BUT ON COMPLETION DELIVERED AS BEBINGTON

HER MASTER WAS CAPTAIN WARLAND THEN IT WAS CAPTAIN HARRISON WHO TOOK COMMAND

IN 1872 SHE WAS SOLD TO ADAMSON & RONALDSON OF LONDON

 IN 1874 SHE DID A VOYAGE FROM LONDON TO NAPIER. THE SHIPS CAPTAIN FOR THIS VOYAGE WAS CAPTAIN KNIGHT


IN 1875 SHE WAS SOLD TO SHAW SAVILL & CO  ( THOU SHE IS ALSO REPORTED AS HAVING BEING PURCHASED SHORTLY AFTER HER LAUNCH BY SHAW SAVILL & CO )

 SHE SAILED UNDER THE SHAW SAVILL FLAG UNTIL 1883 - MAYBE IT WAS UNTIL  1882, AS SHE WAS SOLD TO THE NORWEGIAN COMPANY IN 1882 )

SHE WAS SOLD TO A NORWEGIAN COMPANY IN 1882 ( REPORTS THAT THIS IS WHEN SHE WAS RENAMED ' HANDEL LUST ' WHICH IS WRONG )


IN 1884 SHE WAS SOLD TO CHARLES NEILL OF BELFAST  

IN 1894 SHE WAS SOLD TO A/S HANDEL LUST ( LARSEN & KISER ) AND RENAMED HANDEL LUST 

IN 1874  SHE WAS PROBABLY ON A SHAW SAVILL & CO CHARTER ( WHEN SHE MADE THE VOYAGE FROM LONDON TO NAPIER ) AS SHE WAS ACQUIRED BY SHAW SAVILL & CO FROM R HICKSON OF LIVERPOOL COMPANY THE FOLLOWING YEAR, IN 1875.

I AM NOT SURE WHY SHAW SAVILL & CO PURCHASED HER, EVEN IN HER EARLY DAYS SHE WAS DESCRIBED AS BEING A BIT OF A "TUB" WITH POOR LIVING QUARTERS FOR PASSENGERS.

 ON 14TH FEBRUARY 1876 SHE LEFT GRAVESEND BOUND FOR AUCKLAND, BUT WHILE STILL IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL SHE WAS IN COLLISION WITH ANOTHER SHIP, SHE HAD TO PUT INTO PORTSMOUTH FOR REPAIRS WHICH TOOK TEN DAYS.

 A FEW DAYS AFTER LEAVING PORTSMOUTH TYPHOID AND TETANUS BROKE OUT AMONGST THE PASSENGERS. TO MAKE THINGS WORSE SHE RAN OUT OF FOOD AND WATER BEFORE SHE GOT HALF WAY TO NEW ZEALAND

 THE SHIPS MASTER CAPTAIN HOLDRICH, DECIDED TO PUT INTO PORT ELIZABETH ( SOUTH AFRICA ) FOR FRESH SUPPLIES. SHE EVENTUALLY REACHED AUCKLAND ON THE 15TH JULY 1876, AND WAS QUARANTINED FOR FIVE WEEKS BEFORE THE PASSENGERS COULD DIS-EMBARK ( BY THIS TIME THERE WERE ALSO 70 CASES OF MEASLES ON BOARD, AS WELL AS THE TYPHOID AND TETANUS ) 

 SHE MADE A FURTHER VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND ( WELLINGTON ) IN 1879. SHE HAD MADE HER FIRST VOYAGE TO WELLINGTON BACK IN 1872.

 SHE ALSO DID  ONE VOYAGE ONLY TO DUNEDIN, FROM THE U.K IN 1873.SHE DID THREE VOYAGES TO LYTTLETON, THE FIRST IN 1879, THE SECOND VOYAGE IN 1881 AND HER LAST VOYAGE TO LYTTLETON WAS IN 1884.

 

WHEREAS THE DATES OF HER VISITS TO NEW ZEALAND ARE ALL CORRECT, THERE IS A SLIGHT PROBLEM PERHAPS WITH SOME INFORMATION REGARDING HER BEING RE-NAMED HANDEL LUST AS THIS SUPPOSEDLY  HAPPENED IN 1882,  (  THE SAME YEAR THAT  SHAW SAVILLE & CO AMALGAMATED WITH THE ALBION LINE ) AND HER LAST VOYAGE TO LYTTLETON WAS IN JUNE 1884, SO CLEARLY THERE IS EITHER SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE DATE OF HER RE-NAMING, OR SHE VISITED LYLLETON UNDER HER NEW NAME.

I THINK THAT SHE WAS NOT RENAMED HANDEL LUST UNTIL 1894 WHEN SHE WAS SOLD TO LARSEN & KISER ( A/S HANDEL LUST )

ON 10TH JULY 1902 SHE STRANDED ON OOSTER BANK WHILE ON A VOYAGE FROM MIDDLESBOROUGH TO THE CANIERIES SHE WAS REFLOATED AND TOWED INTO ROTTERDAM WHERE SHE WAS CONDEMMED AND LATER BROKEN UP
