AOTEA WAS BUILT BY C S SWAN & HUNTER AT WALLSEND IN 1894/95 . SHE WAS A VESSEL OF SOME 6364 / 4,912 TONS. SHE WAS FITTED WITH A 1 SCREW ENGINE BY CENTRAL MARINE WORKS OF WEST HARTLEPOOL
SHE WAS OWNED BY SHAW SAVILL & ALBION AND REGISTERED IN SOUTHAMPTON
IN 1910 SHE GROUNDED IN THE ST.LAWRENCE AND INCURRED SERVERE BOTTOM DAMAGE.
IN 1911 SHE WENT AGROUND ON MOVILLE POINT ( S.AFRICA, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE ) WHEN ON A VOYAGE FROM LIVERPOOL TO AUCKLAND BUT WAS RE-FLOATED AND WAS OK
SHE WAS SOLD IN 1912 TO THE BANK LINE ( ANDREW WEIR ) WHO RE-NAMED HER 'NANERIC'.
DURING THE FIRST WORLD WAR SHE WAS REQUISITIONED BY THE ROYAL NAVY AND FITTED WITH TWO 6" GUNS AND TWO 4" GUNS AND SHE THEN SERVED AS AN ARMED ESCORT VESSEL.
SHE WAS RETURNED TO OWNERS IN MARCH 1919 ( PRESUMEDLY BANK LINE )
LATER SHE WAS SOLD TO AN ITALIAN COMPANY IN 1925 ( ATTILO ARDITO OF GENOA ) WHO RE-NAMED HER 'BALLRI'.
