SILISTRIA

THIS VESSEL WAS BUILT IN 1854 IN MIRAMICHI, NB, AND WAS A VESSEL OF 642 TONS AND  OWNED BY D ROSE & CO OF ABERDEEN.

 SHE WAS CHARTERED BY THE ALBION LINE. SHE DID FOUR VOYAGES DOWN TO OTAGO NEW ZEALAND, BUT I AM NOT SURE IF ALL FOUR WERE ON A ALBION LINE CHARTER

.HER FIRST VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND WAS IN 1860, LEAVING THE CLYDE AND ARRIVED IN PORT CHALMERS ON THE 25TH OCTOBER OF 1860.HER SHIPS CAPTAIN ON THIS VOYAGE ( AND THE SECOND VOYAGE ) WAS CAPTAIN MACKAY

HER SECOND VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND WAS THE FOLLOWING YEAR, SAILING FROM GLASGOW ON THE 4TH OCTOBER, AND ARRIVING IN PORT CHALMERS ON THE 11TH JANUARY 1862.

SHE SAILED FROM GLASGOW AGAIN ON 30TH DECEMBER 1862 AND ARRIVED IN PORT CHALMERS ON 17TH APRIL 1863.THE SHIPS MASTER AT THIS STAGE WAS CAPTAIN FERNIE.

HER LAST VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN ARTIS WAS FROM GREENOCH TO PORT CHALMERS, HAVING LEFT ON 24TH APRIL 1867 AND ARRIVING ON 24TH AUGUST 1867.

THE WHITE STAR LINE CHARTERED A VESSEL ALSO CALLED SILISTRIA OF 1,212   TONS IN 1862 FOR A VOYAGE FROM THE U.K TO BRITISH COLOMBIA VICTORIA VANCOUVER ISLAND SHE ARRIVED THERE IN APRIL OF 1862 (  AROUND JUNE 10TH )  ( WITH A STOP AT SAN FRANSICO IF REQUIRED ) VESSELS MASTER WAS CAPTAIN JOCELYN -

THERE MUST HAVE BEEN TWO VESSELS BOTH WITH THE SAME NAME ( NOT UN-COMMON, AS PRIOR TO 1906 SEVERAL SHIPS COULD BEAR THE SAME NAME, AFTER THIS DATE THE MERCHANT SHIPPING ACT WAS MEANT TO BE ENFORCED, THUS PREVENTING THE USE OF DUPLICATE NAMES ON CURRENT VESSELS )

AS THE ALBION LINE  CHARTERED SILISTRIA WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE TIME TO GO FROM PORT CHALMERS, LEAVING ON THE 11TH JANUARY, BACK TO THE U.K, OUT TO BRITISH COLOMBIA, BY APRIL OF 1862, AND HAVE BEEN BACK IN GLASGOW BY THE 30TH DECEMBER 1862

THE ONLY WAY SHE COULD HAVE ACHIEVED THIS, WOULD BE IF SHE WAS CHARTERED FOR THE BRITISH COLOMBIA VOYAGE WITH THE DEPARTURE PORT BEING PORT CHALMERS I.E LEAVING THE UK FOR PORT CHALMBERS AND THEN BACK UP TO BRITISH COLOMBIA WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN FEASABLE AND WOULD MEAN THIS WAS THE SAME SHIP AS THE SILISTRIA ABOVE

 EITHER THIS WAS THE CASE OR THE DATES ARE INCORRECT

 

THESE TWO SHIPS REALLY NEED RESEARCHING A BIT MORE THERE IS A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT SEEM STRANGE

BUILT IN 1856 BY ALEXANDER DENNY OFF DUMBARTON AND ENGINED BY MACNAB & CLARK OF GREENOCK A VESSEL OF 835 TONS SAILED UNDER THE TURKISH FLAG AND WAS ORIGINALLY OWNED BY THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT

SHE WAS LATER OWNED BY McLARTY & LAMONT OF LIVERPOOL

SHE FOUNDERED WHEN ON A VOYAGE FROM ALEXANDRIA TO CONSTANTINOPLE 25TH JUNE 1859 DUE TO A LEAK
